At Southwest Basketball, we believe basketball is more than just a game. It's an opportunity for young athletes to build confidence, discipline, teamwork, and leadership while developing lifelong skills. Through our year-round leagues, camps, classes, tournaments, and personal training, we provide a positive environment where every player can learn, compete, and grow.
Southwest Basketball was founded by Marvin Johnson, whose basketball career began in Louisiana before becoming a Junior College All-American at Howard County Junior College. He later starred at the University of New Mexico (1976–1978), where he set the school's 50-point single-game scoring record, which still stands today. Marvin was selected in the 1978 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls and was named MVP of the English Professional Basketball League in 1981.
In 1979, Marvin discovered his passion for coaching after directing his first basketball camp. More than 35 years later, he continues to help thousands of young athletes develop basketball skills, confidence, and character.
Marvin is supported by an experienced coaching staff, including former University of New Mexico standout Kelvin Scarborough, former professional player Bryon Scales, and longtime coaches Douglas Smith and Kenny Davis. Together, they provide expert instruction while creating a positive and encouraging learning environment for players of all skill levels.
